Recommended Resources

I get asked quite often if I can recommend any particular drawing courses and books, so I’ve created this page with a small selection for you. These are just my personal favourites; I’m sure there are many other excellent resources out there that I may simply not have discovered yet.

If you’re interested in what kind of sketchbooks, pencils and whatnot I use, you can visit my Recommended Materials page.

Online courses

Skillshare is a treasure chest for high quality courses on all sorts of creative topics. The first course in the Art and Science of Drawing Series by Brent Eviston is (rightfully) immensely popular and my clear favourite. I’ve learned so much and his technique is amazing! If you use one of the links on this page you’ll get the first month free of charge.

I absolutely loved this little course on Creative Journaling. The concept is just super helpful for drawing beginners and pros alike, because doing “some doodles” in a private journal throughout the week takes the pressure off (no need to be perfect or even good, no one’s gonna see it but you). It’s also a lot of fun to experiment with all the pretty materials.

This one isn’t art-specific, but since many of us work full time or have other responsibilities, a good productivity course can be super helpful to fit drawing into your schedule and stick to it. I have written a post about 11 Time-Saving Techniques that you might find useful, but if you’d like to dive deeper, I’ve particularly enjoyed Ali Abdaal’s Productivity Masterclass on Skillshare.

Books

Alphonso Dunn’s Pen & Ink Drawing Guide has been a revelation. If you take your time and really try to understand and appreciate his advice, you can learn so much from his expertise. He also has a free YouTube channel, but I don’t regret having paid for the book at all.

I had such a great time with this Urban Sketching Handbook by Stephanie Bower and went pretty crazy with the highlighter. It’s a relatively thin book but there’s a surprising amount of useful info in it and the drawings are so good! You can also have a look at my free blog posts for more urban sketching.

Artist’s Drawing Techniques is a very comprehensive guide with lots of tips on all sorts of drawing techniques, topics and materials. It’s not something you’ll read in a weekend, but it’s a good reference guide to have on your bookshelf for when questions arise.

Websites

I’ve had the great privilege to interview Ch'ng Kiah Kiean, one of my favourite artists, in my article The Rhythm of Space. You can also find all sorts of amazing drawings as well as very useful resources on his own website, such as this fun and useful slideshow on Sketching with Twig & Ink.

Pinterest is such a fun and pretty resource for artists. You get lots of visually pleasing pictures, but it also links you to a huge amount of useful tutorials.

SketchDaily is a super useful database with drawing prompts and reference pictures that you can use for practising (it’s free). There’s plants, animals and yes, nudes, and you can even search by angle and other fun requirements.
